
In his association with Indian National Congress, he held various organisational posts. He was President of the Bhaktiyarpur Thana Congress ( T.C.C.) Committee, General Secretary of the Patna District Congress Committee ( D.C.C.), Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee ( P.C.C.) member and All India Congress Committee ( A.I.C.C.).
As a Congress delegate, he attended party’s Gaya, Madras, Calcutta, Lahore, Karachi, Bombay, Lucknow, Faizpur, Haripura and Tripuri sessions and spread the message of Congress around the country.
He was Director of Patna District for conducting Civil Disobedience Movement, 1930.
He was a member of Bihar Legislative Assembly, elected in 1937 and Chief Whip of Congress Legislative Party in Assembly.
He was elected Secretary of All India Kisan Sabha during All India Kisan Conference at Bharthna in Itawa District of Uttar Pradesh during his absconding period
He was Vice President of All India Forward Bloc and appointed President in the absence of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose during Quit India Movement in 1942.
He was chairman of the Freedom Fighter’s Cell of the AICC (I). He was Congress Regional Secretary of the North-East Zone from 1955 to 1976.
He was Convenor and General Secretary of All India United Left Front from 1947 to 1955.
He was member of Upper House of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) for thirteen years. He resigned from Rajya Sabha in 1972.
He was working President and founder of All India Freedom Fighter’s Organisation.
